Press Release: Red Roof Retreat and NPCA Join Forces for Wetland Regeneration Project
Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON (May 14, 2010)- Red Roof Retreat and the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority (NPCA) are pleased to announce a new Wetlands Restoration Project to be installed at the Red Roof Retreat Ranch location, 1594 Concession Six in Niagara-on-the-Lake. The first phase will be planted on Wednesday May 19, 2010 from 10:00am to 12:00pm. The installation will involve select NPCA staff and local students from Wheatley School and Niagara District Secondary School.
The project involves the restoration of the natural wetland and habitat in the back portion of the ranch site. The NPCA will begin by removing the non-indigenous plants and replace with indigenous plants, trees and shrubs that will keep the soil and water in place. Steffanie Bjorgan, Executive Director of Red Roof Retreat is especially happy about this project and is excited to be partnering with the NPCA. “It’s something that was envisioned for the area from the beginning; to make the property entirely accessible and expand the use of the property, making it available to the entire community to enjoy”, she says. The commitment to preserving the natural environment in Niagara is crucial to both Bjorgan and the NPCA. “There are so few green spaces left in the community. Through this initiative with the NPCA, we’re able to conserve the beauty of this space,” says Bjorgan.
Kelly Jamieson, NPCA Restoration Project Leader adds, “This is a great project to help improve the water quality for this area and benefits will extend to properties surrounding Red Roof Retreat.”
The wetlands restoration project was made possible by a grant of $10,000 from the NPCA Water Quality Improvement Program.
The educational benefits of this project are also of great importance to Bjorgan and Jamieson. “The wetland project will provide a great educational opportunity for the students to learn ‘hands-on’ about nature,” says Jamieson. The second phase will take place by mid-June with the planting of wildflowers and other indigenous trees. Future plans include fully accessible trails out to the wetland space.
