“Legacy Giving means structuring your gift to maximize tax benefits and achieve personal goals while supporting a favorite charitable cause, while still supporting those you love.”

One of the ways to support Red Roof Retreat is by making a Legacy Donation. A legacy gift to Red Roof Retreat may be pledged today for our immediate use or arranged now for completion at a future time. Each type of gift offers particular benefits to the donor, and each supports Red Roof Retreat’s mission of “to provide quality respite and recreational programs to children, youth and young adults with special needs and their families in the Niagara Region.”

GETTING THE CONVERSATION STARTED

Know your intentions for your donation, What is the future value of your estate? Why do you want to leave a gift? How do you see it being used? How large of a gift do you want it to be? How much will go to charity and how much will go to loved ones?

There are many different ways to leave a gift in your estate, here are some options to consider:

  • A Gift of Cash - This is called a ‘bequest’ and is the most common way to leave a gift in your estate. Here you may choose to designate a specific dollar amount or percentage of the net residue.

  • A Gift of Securities - . If you own publicly listed securities, transferring them can have significant tax advantages. YYour estate will receive a donation receipt to help reduce taxes owed, plus the elimination of taxes you would normally have to pay on capital gains.

  • Registered Funds like RRSPs, RRIFs or TFSAs - Choosing to donate whatever is left over from your RRSP, RRIF, or TFSA. is one of the easiest and most flexible ways to give. It’s as simple as filling out your fund provider’s beneficiary form, which you can update any time.

  • A Gift of Life Insurance - You can name Red Roof Retreat as the beneficiary of your life insurance policy. By transferring the ownership, the premium you pay is treated as a donation and you will receive a donation receipt now to apply against your current tax bill.

We suggest you contact and work with your financial advisor or lawyer who can help you plan a bequest that best fits you and how you can best take advantage of the generous tax incentives Canada has to offer.
